When we smoke our ‘internal computer or our automatic pilot’ known as our subconscious mind actually believes we need and want to smoke. We have programmed ourselves to smoke. So even when we make a conscious decision to stop smoking our programme for smoking is still running, so our subconscious will keep reminding us to have a cigarette and if we ignore it, that reminder will become stronger and it can be very difficult to ignore. This is why sometimes someone who has an enormous amount of willpower and has managed to ignore the demand from the subconscious to have a cigarette will still say that they haven’t smoked for X years but that still want one, they still desire that cigarette, because they haven’t switched their programme off.

A meta-analysis, statistically combining results of more than 600 studies of 72,000 people from America and Europe to compare various methods of quitting. On average, hypnosis was over three times as effective as nicotine replacement methods and 15 times as effective as trying to quit alone.
